Why do we hurry?
by Barbora Misakova

A man would think the more technological mediums he has the quicker he is. But why is speed so important in 21st century? And are these technologies really helping us and making us faster? And after all, do we really have a reason to hurry? Article written by Jessica E. Vascellaro says about emails and the end of their era as kings of communication. Their “problem” lies in their slowness and boringness. New generation of services such as Facebook or Twitter are supposedly much faster than email, and more fun. To be honest, I could talk hours about the Facebook “speed”, but that is not an aim of this article (fortunately!). On the other hand there are! also Facebook’s good days when you can click yourself to death. As there is too many information you want to check and so little time to do that, you are doing it in such a hurry, that you hardly can enjoy it. On the other hand, when you want to sort out information according to their importance, it is neither saving your time nor energy. Sure, you can enter filtering, but human mind is too curious and deciding who will be blocked and who won’t takes some time as well. Let’s look at chatting! Chat as it is synchronous type of communication is quicker than email communication, there is no doubt. But when you look at it closer, you can find out it can be slow as well. I bet many of you know the situation when you desperately need some help or advice and you are pressed for time. So you go to chat and ask your friend. But she is at work and she can’t chat with you right now as her boss is standing above her. So you ask another online friend. As his typ! escript is very slow, you can hardly wait for the answer you n! eed so m uch. What is more, while you are chatting, you must be sitting behind your computer, what is slowing you as well as you can’t do anything else during it. That is making you nervous and so on. So are these technological inventions and services really making us quicker, or is it just double-dealing? Actually there are no reasons to hurry. Our urging feeling that we are late and we have to hurry is connected just with these technologies, which say that anything can be done quicker than it is done now. Instead of being controlled by them, we should get hold of them! Maybe we wouldn’t be in such a stress!
