Almost too Liberal to be True
by Barbora Kasparova
The Presidential election, that is the hot topic in the U.S. at the moment. Rather interesting figures pop up to candidate, one wonders at times where they came from. A former U.S. senator for the state of Alaska Mike Gravel (1969 & 1981) reappeared on the American political scene with even more controversy he used to stir back in the days. Not only he is a strong critic of warfare (especially of Vietnam War, and the war in Iraq more recently), he is very much likely not to succeed with the rest of his views. Pro abortion, anti death penalty, gay rights supporter did not choose the easy way to win the heart of the "in-god-we-trust-America". Needless to say, he is a democrat. For not scoring enough in the polls (or simply because of his controversial opinions?) he was excluded by the media from the official democratic debates. That did not discourage the 77 year-old National Initiative promoter. He's decided to use the media that is available, the Internet; to spread his platform, and reportedly he's gained quite a number of supporters (the question is, whether those "supporters" would actually vote for him). One of his main goals is more rights to people, specifically a greater legislative power for them. No matter how small his chances to succeed are, the very important part of his running is, that he can challenge people's conservatives selves and, by being so radical about it, put a different perspective on the issues.
