Online journalism catches up with the traditional one
by Zuzana Zelenakova
Established by publisher Joseph Pulitzer at the beginning of the 20th century and administered by Columbia University in New York City the Pulitzer Prize still remains one of the most prestigious awards in the world that one can get for excelling in journalism, literature or musical composition. Among the most famous recipients of the Prize we can mention Ernest Hemingway, President John F. Kennedy, Arthur Miller or Tennessee Williams. This year's Pulitzer Prizes were dominated by the Washington Post and new York Times, however, for the first time in history also the online media recieved one of the prizes. Non profit online news organization Propublica won a Pulitzer for ! the article called The Deadly Choices at Memorial reporting on New Orleans hospitals and their practices after the Hurricane Katrina. "This is something we're going to see more of in the years ahead as there's more and more collaboration of news entities when it comes to enterprise journalism," said Sig Gissler, administrator of the prizes. Sheri Fink of ProPublica wrote the article in collaboration with The New York Times Magazine. Another online Pulitzer went to the website of the San Francisco Chronicle sfgate.com for their animated cartoons by Mark Fiore. It was the first time an Internet entry won in the category of editorial cartooning. The Washington Post won four prizes, including the one for international reporting for Anthony Shadid's article from Iraq. Post's Gene Weingarten recieved prize in feature writing for "his haunting story about parents, from varying walks of life, who accidentally kill their children by forgetting them in cars." Columnist Kathleen Parke! r won in the commentary category and Sarah Kaufman for critici! sm. New York Times reporter Michael Moss won in the explanatory reporting category for his writing on food safety issues.
